THE RIFT WE ARE EXPERIENCING: MUCH MORE THAN AN EVOLUTION
A few days ago, I was working with a group of managers on team management issues of these times and of the near future. At one point I expressed with them the idea that the generation of managers who rank between the “boomers” and generation X should decisively give up (who has not yet done so) the idea of transferring their working method to the next generation. And of “being the boss” because “I know more”. I don’t want to say that it’s not true that we know more. I wonder, however, how useful it is.
We are not faced with an evolution but with a fracture in the ways of working: in the impact of technology, in the balance of people’s expectations, in market tensions and perhaps, soon, also in social tensions.
So I told them: “we need to help the new generations (not only new hires, but also those who have been in the company for 10 years) build ways of working that we don’t know”. One of the managers asked me: “But how do we teach something we don’t know?”.
Here… that is precisely the point.
